Reproductive behavior of blacksaddled coralgrouper (Plectropomus laevis) at a spawning aggregation site in New Caledonia

Blacksaddled coralgrouper (Plectropomus laevis) is a large, exploited grouper widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific. Like many other groupers, this species is potentially vulnerable to fishing because of its life history characteristics (e.g., large size at maturity and sex change) and its aggregate spawning behavior. However, little is known about the reproductive behavior of P. laevis at spawning aggregation sites. This video footage consists of a compilation of courtship behaviors recorded on November 7 and December 9 2014 using an unbaited rotating remote underwater video (RUV) system deployed around the full moon at Kouaré channel, in the Grand Lagon Sud of New Caledonia (UNESCO World Heritage Site, Southwest Pacific). Courtship behaviors typically involved a male following a female, while shaking its head and body for short bursts. Males displayed a distinctive courtship coloration characterized by a black body and white forehead and midbody areas. Gamete release was not observed in these videos. The sex ratio of the aggregation was female-biased, with few colored males observed in a single video frame. By documenting the courtship coloration and behavior of P. laevis, this video footage can facilitate efforts to identify additional spawning aggregation sites and support the implementation of appropriate conservation and fisheries management strategies.
